Some vision problems cannot be corrected by eyeglasses or contact lenses. A+ Vision Optometry offers vision therapy as an adjunct or alternative treatment. Also referred to as vision training, its goal is to improve the communication and working relationship between your eyes and brain. It usually involves performing a set of eye exercises for a certain period.
Here are some common eye exercises performed during a vision training session and how they help improve your eyesight:
Amblyopia is a condition where one or both of your eyes have impaired vision due to abnormal eye development. As a result, your eyes send varying images to the brain. To prevent confusion, your brain ignores signals coming from the weaker eye. This may result in the gradual function loss of the affected eye, which is why this problem is also known as “lazy eye”. Your eye doctor may recommend wearing a patch on the stronger eye to reduce its visual stimuli. This way, your brain is left with no choice but to acknowledge the affected eye’s visual cues.
During this activity, your eye doctors will ask you to stare at a certain object while looking into a set of lenses of different powers or prisms of varying orientations. Doing this exercise helps train your eyes to see figures clearly, whether from a distant or a nearby starting point.
Pencil Push-Up Therapy
This is one of the most common exercises done during a vision training session. This involves holding a pencil at eye level that has letters or numbers on it. We’ll ask you to focus on a symbol of your choice. As we slowly close in toward your nose, you’ll have to tell us when it appears as a double image. This eye workout can improve the vision of those with convergence insufficiency, binocular vision disorders and even hand-eye coordination problems.
With the constant advances in technology, some vision therapy programs now feature computer-assisted activities. They can help improve your eye alignment, movements and accommodation. They can also enhance the way you interpret and process images.
